Netfilter.org
Netfilter and iptables are building blocks of a framework inside the Linux
2.4.x and 2.6.x kernel. This framework enables packet filtering, network
addresss [and port] translation (NA[P]T) and other packet mangling. It is
the re-designed and heavily improved successor of the previous Linux 2.2.x
ipchains and Linux 2.0.x ipfwadm systems. Netfilter is a set of hooks inside
the Linux kernel that allows kernel modules to register callback functions
with the network stack. A registered callback function is then called back
for every packet that traverses the respective hook within the network
stack. IPtables is a generic table structure for the definition of rulesets.
Each rule within an IP table consists out of a number of classifiers (iptables
matches) and one connected action (iptables target). Netfilter, iptables and
the connection tracking as well as the NAT subsystem together build the
whole framework.

Network Security
Architectures
Cisco Press 2004 by Sean Convery.
The author's goal was to share his experiences he gained while working on
SAFE and consulting with customers, in a way that allows the reader to
design a security system suited to the specific needs of their organization.
There is very little in the way of product specific or introductory
information. Instead it focuses on policy considerations, design
considerations, best practices, sample designs, and case studies. This is a
valuable resource for any technical library. The book's online
web links
by chapter are a great source for any network security architecture research
project.
Port Numbers - Firewall Forensics - Robert Graham
Firewall Forensics (What am I seeing?) This document explains what you see
in firewall logs, especially what port numbers means. You can use this
information to help figure out what hackers are up to. This document is
intended for both security-experts maintaining corporate firewalls as well
as home users of personal firewalls.
Port
Numbers - IANA Site
Updated by IANA, a comprehensive list of port numbers divided into three
ranges: Well Known from 0-1023, Registered from 1024-49151, and Dynamic or
Private from 49152-65535.
Port
Numbers - Internet Storm Center Port Reports
Shows current activity (from DShield) in a customizable format, official
assignments, trojans and alternate uses, vulnerabilities associated with the
port, and allows comments to be added by readers to quickly share new
information.

Intrusion and attack reporting center specific to trojan and remote access
service ports. The following ports should be considered by routing
teams/administration as hostile ports and either closed, filtered or
monitored since they are mostly used for Trojan and intrusion programs.

Numbers - Trojan List by Simovits
The table shows examples of existing trojans and ports being used. The lower
ports are often used by trojans that steals password and either mail the
passwords to attackers or hide them in FTP-directories. The higher ports are
often used by Remote Access trojans that can be reached over the network.

Numbers - Whitehats List
Welcome to the advanced reference archive of current heuristics for network
intrusion detection systems! This comprehensive database of network attack
"signature" information can dynamically create and export signature strings
that are compatible with IDS software such as Snort, Dragon Sensor,
DefenseWorx, Pakemon, or Shoki. Network and System administrators can use
the arachNIDS signatures to detect attacks against their networks. Also,
security professionals have often found arachNIDS useful in researching
network vulnerabilities.
