Internet Emergency Preparedness (ieprep)
Yielding to emergency traffic during a disaster may not be limited to Land,
Sea, and Air. A new working group, formed by the IETF after 9/11, Internet
Emergency Preparedness
ieprep is developing a plan to prioritize emergency communications sent
by public officials via the Internet. The group held its first meeting this
week to figure out how Internet traffic and applications such as e-mail, Web
browsing, instant messaging, voice, video, databases, etc., can be given
preferential access for disaster recovery.
The Internet has become a primary means of communication for many and is a
reliable grid that should be incorporated into our emergency management
infrastructure. The events of 9/11 underscore the need for additional
communication options and the development of “Red Light” Emergency Internet
packets. |
